At Daisy Lane Early Learning, play is more than just fun—it’s how children learn, grow, and connect with the world around them. One of the most powerful types of play we use every day is sensory play.

But what exactly is sensory play, and why is it such a vital part of early childhood development?

What is Sensory Play?

Sensory play involves activities that stimulate a child’s senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste—as well as their sense of movement (vestibular) and body awareness (proprioception). These activities include things like:

  • Playing with sand, water, or playdough
  • Finger painting or messy play
  • Exploring nature with their hands and feet
  • Listening to music and experimenting with sound
  • Tasting new textures or smelling different scents

It’s hands-on, open-ended, and often wonderfully messy—and children absolutely love it.

Why is Sensory Play Important?

Sensory play supports development in more ways than one. Here’s how:

It Builds Brain Connections

When children engage in sensory play, they’re building neural pathways in their brains. These connections support language development, problem-solving, and cognitive growth.

It Improves Fine Motor Skills

Scooping, pouring, squeezing, and pinching all strengthen the muscles in small hands—preparing children for important tasks like writing, using scissors, and self-feeding.

It Helps with Emotional Regulation

Sensory play can be calming. It gives children an outlet to process big emotions and can reduce stress and anxiety—especially during transitions or busy days.

It Supports Language Development

As children describe textures, smells, and actions, they expand their vocabulary and communication skills in a natural, engaging way.

It Encourages Exploration and Curiosity

Sensory play invites children to investigate the world around them, ask questions, and make discoveries—essential building blocks for lifelong learning.

How We Use Sensory Play at Daisy Lane

From sensory trays and natural materials to water play and cooking experiences, we weave sensory learning into everyday life at our centre. Our educators carefully design experiences that are both fun and developmentally meaningful – tailored to each child’s interests and needs.

We create safe, inviting spaces where children are free to explore with their whole selves—hands, minds, and hearts.
